American singer, songwriter and producer Lionel Richie is still entertaining audiences at the age of 73. His smooth and soulful love ballads are what he’s been famous for since the 70s, although he only started a solo career in the 80s. Since then, he has released over 40 singles, five of them reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. With ten studio albums, three live albums and seven compilation albums, Lionel Richie is one of the most famous soul artists of the last few decades. To date, he has sold over 100 million records worldwide.
When he started his music career in the 70s, he was the co-lead singer of the Motown group Commodores, with hit singles such as Still, Three Times a Lady, Sail On and Easy. After he departed from the group, he embarked on an extremely successful solo career as one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Richie has won four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year in 1985 for We Are the World which he co-wrote with Michael Jackson. Among his many awards, he also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for his work on the film adaptation of Les Misérables, a Victor Hugo novel.
One of the top 20 best-selling singles of all time is the song Endless Love which Richie wrote and produced and then recorded as a duet with Diana Ross. This song was both artists' greatest career hit. His first solo album, Lionel Richie, went on to sell over four million copies, with hit singles, My Love, You Are and Truly.
Can’t Slow Down was Richie’s second album, which he released in 1983, and it went to number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling over twenty million copies worldwide. After releasing his world-famous third album, Dancing on the Ceiling, with the single Say You, Say Me, he took a ten-year break from recording between 1986 and 1996. Since then, he has released another seven studio albums and has also joined American Idol as a judge.
